Eau de parfum: what it means, how it differs, and why concentration matters

Most people choose a fragrance based on how it smells in the first thirty seconds. Few know what the label actually means. Eau de parfum, eau de toilette, extrait — these appear on almost every bottle, but they're rarely explained. The difference isn't about quality. It's about oil concentration, and that single number changes how a fragrance projects, how long it lasts, and what you smell when it's been on your skin for three hours.

What eau de parfum actually means

Eau de parfum — EDP — refers to the concentration of fragrance oil in an alcohol carrier. The typical range is 15 to 20 percent oil by volume, with the remainder being alcohol and a small amount of water. That percentage determines everything else about how the fragrance behaves.


A higher concentration of oil means stronger initial projection, a slower drydown, and more prominent base notes. The alcohol evaporates quickly after application — that's the sharp opening you smell when you first spray. What remains, over the following hours, is the oil. The more oil in the formula, the more there is to develop and evolve on skin.


EDP is not inherently better than other concentrations. It's heavier, lasts longer, and projects differently. Whether that's an advantage depends on the fragrance, the occasion, and the person wearing it.

How EDP compares to other concentrations

Fragrance concentrations follow a loose convention. The ranges overlap in practice — different houses define them slightly differently — but the general structure is consistent across the industry.


Eau de cologne (EDC) sits at roughly 2 to 4 percent oil. It's light, projects briefly, and is typically worn in warm weather or as a freshener rather than a full fragrance statement. Eau de toilette (EDT) runs between 5 and 15 percent — the traditional format for most mainstream perfumery through much of the twentieth century, lighter in projection and shorter in longevity than EDP. Eau de parfum occupies 15 to 20 percent, and extrait de parfum — also called parfum or simply extrait — typically sits between 20 and 40 percent. Extrait projects with the most intensity, often requires fewer sprays, and tends to develop slowly and close to skin.


The practical differences: an EDT might last three to five hours on skin; an EDP typically six to eight; an extrait can extend beyond eight, sometimes significantly longer depending on the composition. These are averages. A light, citrus-heavy EDT might fade in two hours. A resinous, oud-heavy EDP might still be detectable the next morning on fabric.

Why EDP became the dominant format

Through the 1970s and 1980s, EDT was the standard format for most fine fragrance. The shift toward EDP accelerated in the 1990s and continued through the 2000s for several reasons.


Consumer preference moved toward longer wear and stronger projection — a single application expected to last through a full day. EDP delivers that more reliably than EDT. At the same time, fragrance ingredient regulations tightened progressively through the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), restricting concentrations of certain naturals — bergapten in bergamot, some musks, certain aldehydes. Higher oil concentration in EDP formulas can compensate for these restrictions by delivering more of the restricted ingredient within safe limits, or by building around them more effectively.


There's also a perception component: EDP commands a higher price point and reads as a more considered product. Whether that perception is always justified is a separate question — but it's part of why the format proliferated.

How EDP wears differently on skin

The drydown of an EDP is different from an EDT in the same fragrance family. EDP projects more forcefully in the first hour — the top notes (citrus, green, aromatic) are carried on a larger volume of oil, so they land with more weight. As the alcohol burns off and the top notes fade, the heart and base notes emerge more prominently than they would in a lighter concentration.


Skin chemistry affects the result significantly. Drier skin absorbs fragrance faster, which can shorten longevity. Warmer skin amplifies projection but also accelerates the top note phase. In cooler temperatures, EDP tends to stay closer to skin and project more quietly — which can be an advantage in enclosed spaces.


Application technique matters as much as concentration. Pulse points — wrists, neck, inside of the elbow — are warm and amplify projection. Spraying at a distance of 10 to 15 centimetres creates an even distribution. Rubbing the wrists together after application is counterproductive: it breaks the molecular structure of the top notes and shortens the opening phase. Apply, let it dry, leave it alone.


Fabric retains EDP significantly longer than skin. A spray on a scarf or collar can still be detectable 24 hours later. Base notes — oud, sandalwood, musks, amber — are the ones that cling to fabric most persistently. This is useful to know when choosing where to apply, and worth being aware of with delicate or pale fabrics, which some ingredients can mark.

Eau de parfum at Illuminum London

Every fragrance in the Illuminum London Core Range is a 100ml Eau de Parfum. The format was chosen for a specific reason: EDP concentration allows base notes to develop fully across the drydown. Compositions built around oud, sandalwood, leather, musk, and amber need time and oil concentration to show what they're doing. In a lighter format, those base structures collapse too quickly.


The range covers twelve distinct compositions. Black Oud is built on oud, vetiver, and amber — a dry, resinous base that develops for hours. White Musk is lighter in character but uses the EDP format to sustain the soft musk base through the full drydown. Taif Rose pairs taif and otto rose with sandalwood and musk — the oil concentration keeps the rose present without sweetening it. Twelve fragrances, one concentration, because the format fits the compositions — not the other way around.
